El Nido Travel Guide 2026

El Nido is the crown jewel of Palawan and arguably the most beautiful place in the Philippines. Towering limestone karst cliffs rise dramatically from an emerald sea, hiding secret lagoons accessible only by kayak, hidden beaches enclosed by sheer rock walls, and coral gardens teeming with tropical fish. The four island hopping tours (A, B, C and D) each reveal different facets of this extraordinary seascape, while Nacpan Beach — a 4-km stretch of golden sand backed by palm trees — competes with any beach on earth.

Tour A – The Lagoons (Must-Do)

Tour A is El Nido's signature experience. You kayak through a narrow entrance into Big Lagoon — a vast enclosed body of water surrounded by towering limestone cliffs draped in jungle. The water shifts from deep emerald to brilliant turquoise. Small Lagoon is accessed by swimming through a small rock opening into an even more intimate space. Snorkelling at Shimizu Island reveals vibrant coral and tropical fish. The tour ends at 7 Commando Beach for lunch on white sand. Tip: Go early (first boat out) or late afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds at the lagoons.

Tour C – Secret Beach (Best Snorkelling)

Tour C is the favourite of many repeat visitors. Secret Beach is accessed by swimming through a hole in a sheer limestone cliff — you emerge into a hidden lagoon completely enclosed by vertical rock walls. Matinloc Shrine is an abandoned chapel perched on a cliff with a beautiful cove for swimming. Helicopter Island (shaped like a helicopter) has the best snorkelling of all tours with dense coral gardens and clear visibility. Hidden Beach is another stunner — a small beach enclosed by karsts.

Best Beaches

  • Nacpan Beach — 4 km of golden sand backed by palm trees, 45 minutes north by motorbike. Regularly voted one of the world's best beaches. Far quieter than town beaches. Fresh grilled fish at beach shacks. The twin beach at Calitang can be reached by walking at low tide.
  • Las Cabanas Beach — Sunset spot south of town. Zipline over the water (₱500). Beach bars, hammocks, golden hour magic.
  • Corong-Corong Beach — South of El Nido town. Fishing boats, local vibe, excellent restaurants. Best for accommodation (quieter than town).
  • Duli Beach — Remote surf beach 1 hour north. Waves, no crowds, off-grid feel.

Essential Tips

  • Cash: Bring enough from Manila. El Nido ATMs run out frequently, especially on weekends. Credit cards accepted at upscale restaurants only.
  • Motorbike: Rent for ₱500/day to reach Nacpan Beach and explore the coast. Most roads are paved but some are rough.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: Mandatory. The coral in El Nido is some of the richest in the Philippines. Do not use chemical sunscreens.
  • Electricity: Power outages are common. Most hotels have generators but check before booking.
  • Best sunset: Las Cabanas Beach or Maremegmeg Beach (same area). Arrive by 5pm for the best spots.
  • Rainy season: June-October brings rain and rough seas. Some tours may be cancelled. November-May is ideal.
